Wilderness Whimsys
Published in Hardcover by American Literary Press (October, 1999)
Author: Marjorie Thompson Sims
Average review score:

I am the authors daughter.Mom writes from true experience
Mrs. Sims writes from the heart. Every poem is from a true experience. Growing up in park service was exciting. She often would wake with thoughts of a new poem in her head in the middle of the night then write the words on whatever was handy. Probably still does! The beauty of places we have lived, Yellowstone , The Tetons & Death Valley give her inspiration.

The Winning Moment: Paintings of the America's Cup, 1851-1987
Published in Hardcover by W.W. Norton & Company (October, 1986)
Authors: Tim Thompson, Ranulf Rayner, and Ted Turner
Average review score:

Beautifully Sailed
Tim Thompson has created a format that shows us the Americas Cup matches that untill 1983 favoured the United States, and then Australia's failed 1987 defence. Each painting has an explanation of the race and people that participated in them.

The written history of this sporting event would fill a large warehouse but as they say, and is beautifully executed by Tim Thompson's paintings, A Picture Says A Thousand Words.

This format would be re-released as the Americas Cup soon moved back to America, then to New Zealand and now of course, Switzerland.

Words to Go: Words to Know Book F
Published in Paperback by Perfection Learning Co. (June, 2001)
Authors: Jan Gleiter and Paul Thompson
Average review score:

Absolutely Fabulous
A vocabulary teaching/learning tool that's both truly useful and fun? How can this be? I don't know how many vocabulary workbooks you've seen, but I've seen plenty, and they're generally just horrid. This one, in contrast, is terrific.

I don't know why Amazon doesn't provide needed information about this book. It's a workbook, and it's clearly meant to be used in a middle-school classroom. That doesn't mean it would have to be used in school; anyone between the ages of ten and fourteen could pick it up and get useful information about words and how to use them . . . and enjoy it.

Several things about this book struck me as unusual. The word lists that begin each lesson actually present solid, useful, appropriate words. The definitions are, amazingly, actually understandable instead of containing words harder than the one being taught. There's nary a diacritical mark to be found; every target word is "respelled" to clarify its pronunciation. And that's just the first page. The rest of each lesson consists of exercises, often quite clever ones, that provide opportunities to see what the words actually mean and how they can be used. There's also quite a bit of simple art and lots of jokes that use the words--all adding to the general idea that word acquisition is anything but tedious.

This book almost made me want to get back into a classroom.

The World Atlas of Golf
Published in Hardcover by Gallery Books (May, 1991)
Authors: Pat Ward Thomas, Herbert Warren Wind, Charles Price, and Peter Thompson
Average review score:

Imagining Dream Rounds and Reliving Great Golf Shots!
Summary: This 5th edition of The World Atlas of Golf belongs in the library of every golfer who wants to appreciate more of the game's rich history . . . and have a Walter Mittyish look at courses that will probably never be seen in person. Over 70 courses get the deluxe treatment of looking at the course layout, the score card, and an in-depth evaluation of the most famous holes. Thorough essays recount the history of the course, including the most memorable golf moments there. Beautiful color photographs capture the holes, and famous historic shots share the winning and losing. Afficionados will appreciate the pin-point descriptions of how to play the world's most demanding holes. The book also boasts a brief gazetteer of over 100 courses providing a one-third page thumbnail sketch of their layout and history. The book also boasts excellent, brief essays on the development of golf course design.

Review: This book will appeal to those who have played these wonderful courses and want to relive the experience, those who wish to know more about the rich history of the world's most challenging holes, and those who are curious about why golfers everywhere rave about certain holes and courses. The material is so rich and detailed that any golf fan could happily spend days with this book and just scratch its surface. A fan could easily extend enjoyment of the book by getting videos of famous championships to see the live action that is captured here in photographs and essays.

The courses are selected from around the world, but are primarily from Europe and the United States. Reflecting the game's heritage, the courses examined start with those in Scotland and proceed from there throughout the British Isles and Eire. From there, you transfer to the European mainland. Next, you go the North America. Asia, Africa, and South America are your final stops.

Naturally, the courses include such standards as St. Andrews's Old Course, Royal Troon, Carnoustie, Royal Dornoch, Muirfield, Turnberry, Loch Lomond, Royal Liverpool, Royal Birkdale, Ballybunion, Valderrama, Shinnecock Hills, Augusta National, Cypress Point, Pebble Beach, Oakmont, Baltusrol, The Country Club, Olympic, Winged Foot, Pinehurst No. 2, Seminole, Merion, Pine Valley, Medinah, Oakland Hills, Dorado Beach and the Mid Ocean in Bermuda. But you will also get exposed to courses that you may not know as well like Sotogrande in Spain and Banff in Canada.

As an example of the hole-by-hole analysis, the book early on looks at the famous 17th on the Old Course at St. Andrews. A hotel cuts off the right side of the hole of this tough par four, also referred to as the Road Hole. In 1995, John Daly won the British Open there in part by hitting a tremendous drive around the hotel and into the fairway. He was able to hit onto the green from there with a 7 iron. The book shows the outline of the hotel, where Daly's ball went, and where most players shoot. Naturally, this looks easy on paper. When I tried the same thing with my drive, my ball went just a bit too far right and disappeared into an area near the foundation of the hotel, out of bounds. I came away much more impressed with Daly's feat.

With the knowledge this atlas can give you, you will find yourself able to take on challenges that great golfers have lived up to before you. You may not match them (and probably won't), but you will enjoy the feeling of trying on the challenging swings of the greats. It'll be a great thrill when you do!

After you finish enjoying this book a few times, think about where else in life you would enjoy reliving great moments of those who have gone before. How can you use those experiences to inspire you to try more, accomplish more, and have more fulfillment in everything you do?

"Take dead aim."

Worlds Without End: The Art and History of the Soap Opera
Published in Hardcover by Harry N Abrams (October, 1997)
Authors: Museum of Television, Radio, Ron Simon, Robert J. Thompson, Louise Spence, Jane Feuer, Laura Stempel Mumford, Robert C. Allen, James Thurber, and Museum of Television & Radio
Average review score:

Essential for all die-hard fans of the afternoon serial.
A beautifully illustrated book with plenty of information on the history of soaps, this book may be as interesting to sociologists as it is to soap fans. Most noteworthy, is the way it differentiates the soaps from one another in terms of issues that each tackles and why. It is interesting to trace how soaps such as "Painted Dreams" began on radio and what appealed (and didn't) to various audiences throughout the decades. Eg: Isn't it hard to believe that "Guiding Light" (On Cable In Sydney) was orginally a 15 minute radio serial about four ministers? Many soaps mentioned in the book will probably be unknown to younger Sydney audiences such as "Search For Tommorrow" and "As The World Turns" which haven't been on the air for years (decades?) but there is good coverage on todays lineup as well. If you like this book you may want to check out A book by Jean Rouverol called"Writing For The Soaps" (1984) and "Soapbox" (1990) Hopefully a television special of a similar nature to this book could be done because the archive material itself would be priceless viewing.
